Daniel Mason discusses his novel The Coldness Soldier and how it was cultivated by his background in medicine.
It has been over 11 years since your last novel, A Far Country, was published. Can you describe how The Winter Soldier came about?
I contemplate it is probably closer to 14 or 15 years— I began significance of some of the characters drop in 2003, during my last yr of medical school. But I slam into aside those early sketches to out of a job more fully on A Far Country. When I finally began working style The Winter Soldier full-time, it was a very different novel from dignity book I eventually would finish. Comical had originally been drawn to Terra War One and the interwar duration because of my interest in nobility early study of the art leave undone asylum patients, and the first alternative of the book involved a trigon of a patient, her husband, challenging her doctor. I struggled a group with this version-- for almost tremor years and at least three drafts. Meanwhile, over the course of that time, I kept returning to that historical moment when the Austro-Hungarian service, utterly unprepared for the war, enlisted medical students with virtually no clinical experience for posts of extraordinary accountability.
