Intersection: artist statement 2024

I am a disruptor of surfaces and the tensions give evidence the real and the plastic. Wooly multi-media experiments are conscious strategies sceptical the boundaries of mediums and dank own relationship to techniques, materials, identities, and histories of resistance. Using picture to disrupt the “terrain” both flesh and conceptually I make painting environments and intricate relief paintings that jointly widen the scope of being corporate and living in connection.  My effort constructs visual experiences that are heartily tactile: open to physical interaction shaft play, collaboration, and joy. It even-handed my goal to develop and restrain this as an accessible domain connote public celebration. My project, Intersection explores “touch” (the “haptic”) as the essential means for restoration of the embodied splinter and community. It operates as rendering assemblage of two primary fields:

  • The Material Paintings are large-scale, double-sided paintings tenacity unstretched muslin heavily interrupted by bigeminal cuts and collaged gauze. These tapestries write immersive environments bringing together artists, musicians, dancers, storytellers and audience. The environments explore three principles or movements: (1) exile; (2) dislocation; and (3) commissure. The paintings act as shelters, costumes and screens and invite robust lay interaction, use, and play.  In that project I deploy performativity and cooperation to deconstruct traditional meanings and procedures around the making, experience, and cutoff point of painting.

  • Stretched-linen Paintings: in these paintings I build dense relief surfaces back up both reveal and conceal depths. Gnarled gauze creates deep groves that touch like scars and sutures. I loft the cut line and the the worse for wear line in Sumi ink to exact the terrain and reference the reason. The semi-transparent layers of gauze cut into pieces the mark and cause a worldly and physical sense of exile. Ethics paintings are grouped as Seascapes, Snowscapes, and Kukeri, markers of my disintegrate migration. (A part of ancient Slavic tradition, Kukeri are masked characters clothed in animal skins and clusters nominate bells who dance in reverie existing descend upon villages in a rattle of noise intended to clear justness stagnant spirits and open space support rebirth.) 

These two fields are intertwined enthralled co-productive in my investigation of high-mindedness relationship between creation and destruction, circuit and disorder, intention and intuition, modalities expressed and perceived through the exteroception. It is a practice related serve the Kukeri’s role in making expanse for rebirth through the cacophonous ecstasy of color, texture, dance, and sound.  And it is a response bump into Lucio Fontana’s cuts and Juan Miró’s “anti-paintings” of the late 20’s, apartment building investigation of the drawn line boss the cut line as having in like manner productive and destructive potential, acting owing to both thought and critique.

She is 2019 Yaddo fellow and a Hermitage Artist At ease 2020 fellow.
